Hey folks, Harry here with more on 13 DAYS, the film based upon the events that took place during the CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS and... I'll be damned, they are actually going to use the USS JOSEPH P KENNEDY to do it's thing for the movie... and frankly... that's pretty dang cool if ya ask me. Here's the scoop... check out them links at the bottom for more info on the history of it all...
The ex-USS JOSEPH P. KENNEDY (DD 850), was towed to Goat Island from Fall River, MA where it has been in mothballs for years. It's being used by a movie production company for a new feature film starring Kevin Costner called "13 Days (in October)" about the Cuban Missile Crisis. The number "753" has been painted on the hull to make it appear as the ex-USS JOHN R. PIERCE.
The JOSEPH P. KENNEDY was the actual ship that stopped the Greek Freighter carrying the Soviet missiles during the crisis. To make a political statement to the Soviets during the crisis, the President ordered the ship that carries his family namesake to intercept the freighter. Other destroyers shadowed the freighter until the KENNEDY could steam down to the vicinity from its homeport in Newport. The KENNEDY gained worldwide attention at that moment for intercepting and forcing the ship to turn back.
The ship and film crew will soon be towed out to sea for a few days to finish their filming. She is scheduled to return to Newport for public tours beginning May 7. For more information on the JOSEPH P. KENNEDY, see: this link. There is more history at this link.
