Here’s one of the year’s bigger TV surprises.
“Dragons: Riders of Berk” turns out to be a TV sequel worthy of 2010’s first-rate “How To Train Your Dragon” motion picture. Tonight’s “premiere” sports tremendous computer-generated imagery but also proves full of unusually sharp verbal and visual comedy.
Many of the key voice cast from the movie – including Christopher Mintz-Plasse, America Ferrera, T.J. Miller, and (most critically) Jay Baruchel - are back for the series, with Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill and Craig Ferguson replaced by perfectly serviceable sound-alikes.
Tonight’s official opener (Cartoon Network aired a two-episode sneak preview last month, see below) is livestock centric: the Vikings’ chickens won’t lay eggs and its cattle won’t produce milk because they’re all terrified of the massive dragons that very recently began living among the humans. (My favorite components of the episode are the expressive CGI sheep, adorable as they are hilarious.)
The ambitious half-hour episode (how can the creators hope to keep this up?) also manages to be moving without making too big a deal about it.
I’m DVRing the entire series. I certainly can’t recommend tonight’s episode enough.

Fox's "Masterchef," meanwhile, hit its best number of the year, beating a new episode of NBC's "America's Got Talent" for the first time:
