Almost exactly 30 years after NBC made Michael J. Fox a star with “Family Ties,” NBC ordered 22 episodes of a new sitcom based on the “Back To The Future” icon’s life.
The new project will deal with a New York-based family man dealing with Parkinsons, the disease that precipitated Fox’s exit from ABC sitcom “Spin City” 12 years ago.
Since leaving “Spin,” Fox has earned Emmy nominations for his work on a number of other series, including “Scrubs,” “Boston Legal,” “Rescue Me,” “Curb Your Enthusiam” and “The Good Wife.” He won an Emmy for his “Rescue Me” role.
Unlike “Family Ties” and “Spin City,” the new sitcom from writer-producer Sam Laybourne (“Worst Week,” “Cougar Town”) will be laughtrack free.
