This is it, Lee Child fans: your first look at Tom Cruise cracking skulls as Jack Reacher in JACK REACHER (previously titled ONE SHOT) in Russian!
It appears that writer-director Christopher McQuarrie is going for a tough, stripped-down '70s-style action flick, which is totally fine by me. The big question, though, is "Do I buy Cruise as the kind of guy who can come out of a five-on-one dust-up on top?" The Reacher of the books is more of a brawler, while Cruise seems to be summoning the ruthless, joint-popping efficacy of Jason Bourne. It's nothing new, but Cruise sells it with just a hint of the live-wire malevolence he brought to COLLATERAL (still one of his finest performances). If the story's there, this should be a good goddamn time at the movies.
We'll find out when JACK REACHER hits theaters on December 21, 2012.
