Louis CK continues to write and direct all episodes of “Louie.” He used to edit those episodes as well, but this year he’s hired the great editor Susan Morse, who I believe edited all of Woody Allen’s movies from “Manhattan” to “Celebrity.”
More changes: “Lucky Louie” vet Pam Adlon appears to be gone this season, both as a producer and an actress, but the great TV writer Vernon Chatman (“Wonder Showzen,” “South Park”) has stepped in as a new producer.
I’ve seen the first five episodes of the new “Louie” season and can tell you they all look more than ever like little Woody Allen movies. They don’t sound like Woody Allen movies, but they feel and move like Woody Allen movies.
Tonight’s first episode back, titled “Something Is Wrong,” is scary for a few reasons, one being that it stars a 30-year-old Gaby Hoffmann as Louie’s girlfriend. It’s jarring to realize the little 8-year-old from “Field of Dreams” and “Uncle Buck” is now old enough to play someone old enough to bone the bald, doughy 44-year-old ginger we’ve all come to know and love.
On the flip side, next week Louie meets a new potential love interst played by 51-year-old Melissa Leo (“Frozen River,” “Treme”).
My favorite episodes of the initial five are the fourth and fifth, which star Maria Bamford (“The Comedians of Comedy”) and Parker Posey (“Waiting for Guffman,” “Best In Show,” “A Mighty Wind,” “For Your Consideration”) as still more potential love interests. These episodes, collectively titled “Daddy’s Girlfriend,” are so compelling I’m hoping their storylines spill into future installments.
