Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
Iron Man is still my favorite Marvel movie. There hasn’t been one Marvel Studios movie I’ve disliked, actually, but there’s something special about Iron Man. I hope Kevin Feige and the Marvel team send Jon Favreau a thank you email every day because it was his vision that locked the cinematic Marvel universe in. He had the right idea, brilliantly cast the picture, hit a fantastic playful, but not silly tone and, maybe most importantly of all, hired Matty Libatique to shoot it.
You may prefer other Marvel movies and I get that. It’s the same way with the books themselves… different characters speak to different people. As much as I love what Joss Whedon did with The Avengers, you can still feel Favreau’s influence on the character. Little things, like the gravity dynamics of the suit in flight, all stem from that first movie.
Now, Iron Man 2 doesn’t hold up as well. It’s an oddly small story. The stakes never feel huge and it suffers from the same problem that the first one did… a big build up to a kind of wimpy main villain battle. But again, Favreau’s strengths still show through. The man knows how to cast a picture. Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke… and Gary Shandling as a dickhead Senator? I mean, come on!
The script problems with Iron Man 2 are well reported. If they could have spent a year fine-tuning it I think the film could have been The Empire Strikes Back to Iron Man’s Star Wars, but as it stands now it’s a fun movie that feels more of a side story than a main arc.
