Rob Zombie isn't abandoning THE LORDS OF SALEM, which he's currently finishing up, but, for his next project, Zombie will be leaving the horror genre altogether to write, direct and produce BROAD STREET BULLIES, a biopic of sorts on the 1970s Philadelphia Flyers, known as much for their back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships as their intimidating play. In fact, it was that brutality on the ice which led to the legendary story of their defeat the Soviet Union's Central Red Army team in an exhibition after the Soviets left the ice midway through the first period in protest of the Flyers' physical style of play.
Deadline reports that Zombie managed to secure the rights to the team's story and has the full support of the Philadelphia Flyers organization moving forward, viewing it as some sort of ROCKY meets BOOGIE NIGHTS mix, due to the eclectic collection of characters on the team and their blue collar nature on the ice.
This is really where we'll see what Zombie has in him as a director, as he escapes the comfort zone he's built for himself in horror. Even still, his horror films have produced mixed results with the HALLOWEENs not seen so favorably, while THE DEVIL'S REJECTS easily ranks as his best and HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES a bit of a mixed bag. He could have easily just stuck to what he knows, but I commend Zombie for taking on the challenge of doing a hockey movie, something you wouldn't have expected from him.
Now who's ready to make the story of the 1970s Oakland Raiders...?
