There's a new trailer making the rounds for HARA-KIRI (a remake of Masaki Kobayashi’s 1963 film). This one's from director Takashi Miike - who in 2010 fried brains and washed screens with blood and ultraviolence with 13 ASSASSINS, a film as beautiful and haunting as it is harsh and unrelenting. It takes that picture a while to lock its characters and narrative into place...but once it does (there's no doubt about when that happens), the result is truly masterful and impactful.
For its US release, HARA-KIRI arrives on iTunes July 17 and begins a theatrical run a few days later. I understand this is a very different kind of film than 13 ASSASSINS - which it should be - Miike's not the kind of director who should be repeating himself.
