“Game of Thrones” offered an excellent season finale last week, but what sticks with me from that night wasn’t the horseshit outside the throne room or Dany’s visit with her Khal or the hoard of zombies that menaced the Night’s Watch. It was the sad exit of “Mad Men’s” Lane Pryce, one of my favorite characters in all of television. Perhaps the craziest, most chilling moment was when Lane snapped his own eyeglasses in half.
Certainly other people fired from Sterling Cooper have enjoyed less tragic exits. Paul Kinsey is off seeking enlightenment in Hollywood. Freddy Rumson even came back with a $2 million contract under his arm. I trust we’ll see a much less married Sal Romano down the line.
It’s also interesting how Lane’s dire financial condition lit a fire under Don’s ass.
"You let that wax figurine discourage you?" Roger Sterling, whose LSD-engendered enlightenment wore off, was in rare form last Sunday.
Also interesting? How close Sansa Stark and Sally Draper came to entering womanhood on the same night.
Lane made it to 1967, right? Ronald Reagan became governor of California on Jan. 5, 1967. The first Super Bowl was played Jan. 15. Gus Grissom died on the launchpad Jan. 27. “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” premiered on CBS Feb. 5. On Feb. 17, The Beatles released the “Penny Lane”/”Strawberry Fields” single. On Feb. 20, Kurt Cobain was born.

I’ve seen the first three episodes of this year’s edition of “True Blood.” HBO permits me to reveal that Rutina Wesley, who played Tara, is back this season – but I’m not permitted to say how.
Those looking forward to the return of Russell Edgington will not see it tonight. SVU icon Chris Meloni doesn’t join the cast as a new vampire badass until next week. And fans of “Veronica Mars,” “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Big Love” will be excited to learn Tina Majorino is on her way.

Desperate they may lose her forever, Sookie and Lafayette struggle with what to do about Tara, while also cleaning up after Debbie Pelt. Meanwhile, Bill and Eric, cleaning up a mess of their own, are visited by the Vampire Authority, one of whom is Nora, a woman from Eric's past. In search of the missing Marcus, Alcide's werewolf pack comes after Sam. With Bill away, Jessica enjoys her new freedom by partying with some local college kids; Jason is visited by the recently turned Reverend Steve Newlin; Terry's PTSD is reignited by an old Iraq War buddy, Patrick; Alcide turns up at Sookie's to warn her about the recently resurfaced Russell Edgington.
We’re only seven days from finally learning who killed Rosie Larsen. Last week Darren Richmond told the world he attempted suicide the night Rosie died, Stan Larsen almost killed a guy and a key-card led Sarah Linden to Richmond’s office.
AMC says of tonight’s “Donnie Or Marie”:
Linden and Holder have the killer within reach. The Richmond campaign prepares for Election Day. The Larsen family attempts to regain a sense of normalcy.

* A big dip to 1.4 last Sunday for the MTV Movie Awards, which hit a 2.3 last year. It needs to bring back those movie parodies. More watched repeats of Fox’s “Family Guy” and “American Dad.”
* “Game of Thrones’” season finale brought the show to an all-time ratings high. It also brought HBO’s “Girls” to a series high.
* “Mad Men’s” penultimate episode rose sharply from its season nadir the week prior. “The Killing’s” ante penultimate episode also rose, if not as much.
