More than 15 years before writer Roy Huggins and actor James Garner would collaborate on “The Rockford Files,” the pair launched the superb comic western “Maverick,” the tale of Bret Maverick, a witty, articulate professional card player travelling the Old West.

If you’ve never seen the show, which originally ran on ABC between 1957 and 1962, know that the “The Rockford Files” was allegedly pitched to NBC as “Maverick as a private detective.”

Garner was intended as the sole star of “Maverick” and appears alone on the season-one DVD box, but 10 of the 27 first-season are essentially Garner-free. Those 10 star Jack Kelly (“The Hardy Boys,” “Get Christie Love”) as Bret’s brother Bart (introduced in a supporting role in episode eight). A card player identical to Bret in every way except for the guy playing him, Bart was introduced to ease production concerns: it was taking more than a week to shoot each weekly “Maverick” episode. Warner Bros.’ solution was to shoot two episodes simultaneously with two different crews and two different lead actors playing essentially the same character.

Bret and Bart appeared together again in an episode-long flashback in the 21st installment (“Trail West To Fury”) and were reunited in the first-season finale, which saw the pair mistaken for Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday.

(Huggins left the show at the end of season two, citing a life-threatening bout of pneumonia. Garner left the series at the end of season three, replaced by future Persuader Roger Moore -- who accepted the role of cousin Beauregard Maverick after Sean Connery turned it down.)
