From out of the past, or is that the future? Marty McFly has sent us a report on the new film WHERE THE MONEY IS and he wasn't too impressed...
Poor Paul Newman. Poor poor Paul Newman. I realize that good parts for older actors are hard to come by but I didn't know it was this bad. I'm thankful to him though because he is the only reason Where The Money Is is somewhat watchable. Even with Linda Fiorentino in it! We've seen this movie so many times before but someone obviously thought we should see it again. Older thief is convinced by young inexperienced one to pull off one last job. In this case, Newman plays an aging bank robber who fakes a stroke and is put in a nursing home where the nurse, played by Fiorentino, suspects he is full of it. She breaks into his files and finds out about his past. So she finally gets him to talk and then asks him to help her steal some cash from an armored car. Then her husband, played by Dermot Mulroney, gets in on the deal. You can bet that there is gonna be some suspicions of deception among these three, but who cares?
In the film's only entertaining scene, Linda tries to make him break from the whole stroke act by giving him a lap dance and he doesn't even flinch. No reaction to a lapdance from Linda Fiorentino? If only the rest of the acting in this movie were that good. Linda is hot but she just isn't convincing as a bored small towner. But the writers think the audience will buy it because they throw in that she was prom queen. Mulroney just stands around with a dumb look on his face. Newman has still got that charm and I can't imagine how bad this would be without him.
Every scene seems taken out of another movie that did it better. The film has nine producers including Tony and Ridley Scott. I don't know what they were all thinking. You'll know exactly where this movie is going way before it gets there. And the score and soundtrack are horrific. You'd think the film came out in the 80's from Mark Isham's dated sounding score and two songs by The Cars. Thankfully, its a merciful 88 minutes long.
Let's hope Newman's talent is never wasted like this again. Let's get this man some better scripts. After Message In A Bottle than this, I'm worried about him.
I'll see ya in the future!
