Hey folks, Harry here with this rather sad look at SCARY MOVIE, which will be screening a damn powerfully funny trailer soon, but at least from this source... is painfully unfunny. Now... I thought this film was supposed to be ready in time for MAY 5th, but from the sound of how rough this print was... That doesn't sound very likely... Has anyone heard an updated release date? If it is still coming out May 5th... it'll be stomped by GLADIATOR, and then it will have it's legs, arms and head cut off cause that film is the real deal. Remember though... this was a rough cut... ROUGH ROUGH ROUGH CUT, so a lot can change, and we did have that one fella that liked it. So we'll see...WATCH OUT FOR SPOILERS!!!
Hey-
Being a college student in western Massachusetts doesn’t allow me many opportunities to contribute ‘scoops’, but I just saw a film, which may be of interest to you.
The film is Scary Movie, previously titled Scream if You Know what I did last Halloween. (HARRY NOTE: It was also once called: Last Summer I Screamed Because Halloween Fell On Friday the 13th)
First of all, I have to explain that I am a huge fan of I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, written and directed by the same man, Keenan Ivory Wayans. I feel that the exploiting of the exploitation genre worked for that film for the most part, whereas in Scary Movie, most of the ideas kind of fall flat.
The version of the film I saw was very rough, with hardly even a temp track and unfinished green-screen shots. However, I was able to get the gist of this movie. As you probably know, this film is a parody of nineties teen horror films. If you are familiar with the Scream trilogy (at least Scream 1 & 2) you will see many parodied scenes from those films and the I Breast What you Boobed Last Hooter films (to quote John Stewart).
This works in some places, for example a scene involving the masked killer from the Scream movies interrupting a bunch of stoners’ smoking session, and joining them to get completely lit. The majority of the other moments are forgettable. My friends and I found the scenes involving slap-stick or physical comedy to be the funniest, with a few scenes that rival the raunchiness levels of There’s Something About Mary’. One scene in particular, involves a “female” gym teacher’s nutsack hanging out of the bottom of his gym shorts. I know we won’t be forgetting that haunting image anytime soon.
This film is left hanging by its poor script. While I wasn’t expecting anything amazing, I was let down by most of the dialogue. Most of the spoken jokes were throwaway lines, and sometimes the jokes don’t even make sense. I think what killed this movie for me, is that the scriptwriters relied on filling the script with movie parodies from The Blair Witch Project to The Matrix and (btw: Four Oscars!!?!? What the fuck!?). To top it all off, they end it with a lame Usual Suspects ending which makes the Wrongfully Accused’ s Usual Suspect’s parody seem like a work of genius.
As Jake the Snake mentioned in an earlier review, this film will offend some people. But that’s a given in this type of exploitation film.
The bottom line: the script sucks, the jokes are pretty stupid, with a few redeeming physical jokes. If this sounds like your cup of tea, see it in a second run theatre.
