AIN'T IT COOL with Harry Knowles: Episode IV: The New Cinema of Douglas Trumbull!!! The Future of Event Filmmaking Is Almost Here!

Hey folks, Harry here...  I shouldn't have to tell you a thing about Douglas Trumbull, most hardcore film geeks know his name with great reverence...   but I also understand that a lot of you readers are quite a bit younger - and having grown up in the digital age, this filmmaking hero might have been lost in this age of pixels.   Douglas worked with Stanley Kubrick to change filmmaking forever with 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, something that Trumbull did in his early 20s.  A true wonderkid.     He went on to head up VFX on films like ANDROMEDA STRAIN for Robert Wise.  After that he was handed the director's chair for his wonderful SILENT RUNNING, a film he made for just $1 million dollars. Then he headed up the FX team on  CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE, BLADE RUNNER - 3 of the greatest visual feasts ever put together.  He created SHOWSCAN and was a major force in IMAX and true giant screen cinematic events.   If you've ever been blown away by the BACK TO THE FUTURE: THE RIDE - that was Trumbull too.   Last year he worked with Terrence Malick on TREE OF LIFE - and they are still working together on their IMAX project.   But this first journey to the basement, I couldn't wait to get into this new cinema that Trumbull is creating up in the Berkshires of Massachusetts.   Now - sit back and let Trumbull make you dream of things we've never seen...   Something that has yet to be for us.   He discusses THE HOBBIT and AVATAR 2 briefly - but the hints of what is to come are so tantalizing.  Here we go...
