Maggie Smith, who provides much of the comic relief on ITV/PBS’ “Downton Abbey,” is now expected to leave the show following the now-shooting third season.
The 77-year-old actress reportedly wanted more time to pursue her still-busy movie career. In 2011 alone she contributed to the final “Harry Potter” movie, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and “Gnomeo & Juliet.” She also recently completed work on Dustin Hoffman’s official directorial debut “Quartet.”
Lord Grantham’s mother, the Dowager Countess, will succumb to illness, according to an unnamed source speaking to British newspaper The Daily Mail.
"Downton" producer Carnival Films describes rumors of Smith's departure as "nonsense," but Carnival has yet to announce Smith has been signed for a fourth season.
The Mail suggests her departure will come with this year's Christmas episode.
Shirley MacLaine recently joined the cast as Lady Grantham's wealthy American mother.
