I think my biggest complaint about “Alcatraz” is it squanders great opportunities to see badass criminals from the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s struggle to adjust to the world of 2012.
A slightly lesser complaint I have is all the Alcatrazers who re-emerge in 2012 are skinny, handsome young white guys with full heads of short dark hair. They all look so similar I have a devil of a time telling Rebecca Madsen’s grandpappy from Silvane from the sniper guy from the landmine guy.
America likes to jail its blacks. African Americans make up only 13 percent of the general population but make up about half of all U.S. prison inmates. The fact that we’ve only seen white Alcatrazers in 2012 had me convinced that Alcatraz was a facility that housed only white fellows.
But tonight Team Hauser is after a black man named Clarence Montgomery, so I’m all confused.
I also wince at the idea that Emerson Hauser is going to cure his timelost girlfriend Lucy Sengupta of a bullet wound by reading to her. But maybe there’s more to it?
I hope answers start coming soon. After a strong start, “Alcatraz” is now Fox’s lowest-rated scripted hourlong not titled “Fringe.” I don’t think we’re getting a second season. Bad Robot!
