Kevin Biegel is funny. FACT.
Biegel was a college student when he wrote a review of “Something About Mary” for Ain’t It Cool News. The Farrelly Bros. read that review and liked it so much they hired him to punch up their screenplays. Biegel went on to write for “Scrubs” and “South Park” and three years ago co-created ABC’s “Cougar Town.”
Biegel yaps an awful lot about how awful his title “Cougar Town” is, but I am not persuaded. On Sept. 29, 2009, the night “Cougar Town” and the far more blandly titled “Modern Family” both premiered, “Cougar Town” got the better ratings. I’d argue “Cougar Town” is a better title than “Fawlty Towers” or “The Larry Sanders Show” or “The Simpsons.”
“Cougar Town” has been off the air for almost nine months and returns tonight at 8:30 behind Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing.” There’s a lot of rumbling about how “Standing” and “Cougar” are not terribly compatible. Also, the post-“Standing” timeslot has emerged as something of an ABC Death Slot.
So listen. Quit watching “NCIS” and “Glee” and “Biggest Loser” already and start watching “Cougar Town.” If you do, ABC will keep ordering more “Cougar Town” episodes, channels will be able to strip it for syndication, Biegel will grow richer than MacFarlane, and he will prove even more capable than ever of buying me margaritas.
