Ahoy, squirts! Quint here adding on to a story that hit yesterday.
Matthew Vaughn did what most of us thought was impossible under the current Fox administration: He made a great X-Men movie! And a prequel no less. Even with the deck stacked against him he cast the movie about as well as you could cast it (McAvoy and Fassbender alone would qualify as being labeled inspired) and directed the hell out of the movie.
They've been talking about the possibility of a sequel since First Class hit with good Box Office numbers and outstanding critical acclaim and now Fox has made it official. Fox has announced that Vaughn returns with producers Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg as well as the entire cast (as you can read here).
That means more Magfassbender, which means more happy dancing in the geek community. No word on a storyline, but there was some idle talk from the team about possibly opening the film with the Kennedy assassination. Will they go for it, blaming the magic bullet on Magneto, or back off what's certain to be a fairly controversial scene if they actually do film it?
Here's what I'd love to see: Of course, I'd love for Vaughn to finally get some Sentinels in, especially if they're awesome '60s robots, but I wonder if they can go that big and not butt heads with Singer's trilogy? That's why they should do the Days of Future Past storyline, pull a JJ Abrams Star Trek and branch off the First Class timeline from the Singer films and then they can do whatever awesomeness they want (and maybe in a few years right the horrible wrong that was Brett Ratner's interpretation of the Dark Phoenix Saga). Oh, if they go that way we get Sentinels for sure, they can bring in Hugh Jackman as Wolvie again (how fun would it be to see him kick ass in the robopocalypse?) and make nerds all over the world die with raging geek-boners.
Just a thought.
No matter what, though, I'm very happy to see the team returning. Will Jane Goldman also return to co-write? I hope so because while Simon Kinberg surely can't shoulder all the responsibility for X3, it's enough to make me slightly less confident if he's the only writer on the project.
