Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
The genius of Young Frankenstein is not readily apparent on first glance. It’s hilarious, an incredibly well-written and performed comedy. However as a spoof movie it’s unparalleled. You don’t need to have seen Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein to get the humor. In fact, I hadn’t seen any of them when I watched Young Frankenstein at a very young age. As I grew up and got on my Universal Horror kick I watched the first two, loving the gothic horror of the first, but falling head over heels for Bride. Then, years later I watched Son of Frankenstein and appreciated Young Frankenstein on a whole new level!
Young Frankenstein is silly-smart, the best possible note to hit in this kind of comedy. Watching it today makes me miss Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle and, in a different way, Gene Wilder, but at the same time it makes me really happy that the Movie Gods pointed them all at this one moment in time to turn out something truly great. I’d love it if Wilder had one last hurrah as a performer. His personality up on the screen is much missed.
Anyway, here’s a shot of Mel Brooks working the camera on the set of Young Frankenstein. Apparently Devin Faraci worked camera on Young Frank. Who knew? Also note Gene Wilder sneaks into the picture at the far right. Click to embiggen!
