Elijah Wood is no stranger to murder, as the film SIN CITY proved pretty conclusively. He also kills at karaoke and at boxing, as Fantastic Fest attendees can vouch. Now he’ll kill onscreen again, in a remake of William Lustig’s seminal slasher film MANIAC, playing the lead role. Bloody-Disgusting broke the story, and Deadline reports that:
Wood plays the role of a serial killer who works at a shop that sells antique mannequins. He finds victims on the Internet and stalks them like prey, all the while suffering from hallucinations that throw him back into the past, when he was abused by his own mother. In his twisted mind, he gains a measure of revenge against his mother with each kill.
I haven’t seen William Lustig’s film (yeah, yeah, it’s on the list) but I’ll be sure to see it soon, if only for comparison. As it screened recently in Austin, I hear it still holds up well, and maybe the new project, which will be directed by Franck Khalfoun from a script by Alexandre Aja and Grégory Levasseur, will give the older film more exposure. Congratulations to Elijah Wood and looking forward to the movie.
