Batman: Year One (Blu-ray) is the anime-ish adaptation of Frank Miller’s four-issue Batman run from 1987. I’m pretty sure I read the compilation two decades ago and pretty sure I’ve even got a copy languishing in a closet, but the story in this project is nothing I remember.

Only 64 minutes long, “Year One” depicts newly hired Gotham police lieutenant James Gordon as kind of a Batman in his own right, commandeering a motorbike and beating up a former Green Beret twice his size. While Batman and Catwoman are going through their origin stories (Bruce Wayne is just back from 12 years abroad as the story begins), the emphasis is on Gordon, which could explain why Bryan Cranston, perfectly cast as the voice of Gordon, gets top billing.

As DC’s PG-13 straight-to-Blu adaptations go, “Year One” falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. It’s full of well-animated action sequences, including a particularly harrowing chase scene involving a kidnapped infant, but it very much dwells in the shadow of the Christopher Nolan films (which themselves seem to draw from “Year One”).

Extras include an action-packed Paul Dini-scripted “Catwoman” short starring Eliza Dushku, who voices the character in “Year One” as well.

There are a couple of documentaries featuring new interviews with (among others) the great 1970s Batman writer/editor Denny O’Neil. Nobody appears to have spoken on camera with Frank Miller, but there’s a panel hosted by a 60-year-old character named Michael Uslan, who appears to have produced both some of the finest superhero movies ever (“Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight”) and some of the very worst (“Batman Forever,” “Batman and Robin,” “Catwoman,” “The Spirit”).

The set includes also a nifty preview of “Justice League: Doom,” which positions Nathan Fillion’s return to Hal Jordan next to Tim Daly’s return to Superman and quite a few of the folks who voiced the old “Justice League Unlimited” series.

Research tells me The Street: The Complete Collection is a 2006-2009 BBC series about a row of homes in Manchester, England, and the folks who dwell within them.

It’s won quite a number of awards, but what caught my attention was its eyebrow-raising cast, which includes Bob Hoskins, Anna Friel, Jim Broadbent, Jane Horrocks, Timothy Spall, David Thewlis, Gina McKee and even current Doctor Who Matt Smith.
