Andy Whitfield, the 39-year-old Australian-based actor and model who rocketed to stardom last year after he was cast as the title character in Starz’ “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” passed away Sept. 11.
Whitfield’s non-Hodgkin lymphoma prevented him from appearing in the Starz series’ second season; he was succeeded in the role by Australian actor Liam McIntyre.
After a handful of Australian TV roles, Whitfield was cast in the title role in “Gabriel,” a 2007 feature about an archangel determined to bring light to purgatory.
