Hey folks, Harry here. Over at Hollywood Reporter they are running a story that basically says that Harrison Ford is looking at possibly taking the first pay cut in his career to star opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones in Steven Soderbergh's TRAFFIK... a film based upon a BBC documentary series about the USA's war on drugs in Mexico and South America. Why is this the type of news that 'makes my heart soar'?
Well... It's simple. It means that Harrison Ford, has finally recognized that it is the work... the material... that is important. Years back, I read some interview with Harrison Ford where the interviewer basically asked him if he'd ever pull a 'Bruce Willis' and lower his asking price to star in a smaller film to get a great part. And Harrison said something that amounted to saying, 'Why would I do that, I'd still have to work the same amount of time.' Like I said... it was something VERY close to that... that was the gist of it. And I threw the magazine in a trash bucket and just stomped away. I was furious. My film hero had basically told me, that he was in it for the money and could give a shit about THE WORK. THE ART. And ever since that moment... I've been pissed at Harrison Ford.
I've sat there and watched films like THE SIXTH SENSE, THE GREEN MILE and AMERICAN BEAUTY pass by Harrison, while he still hung to the same 'friendly' circle of directors that he's comfortable with. Not allowing himself to be pushed by someone like Peter Weir... or end up in another MOSQUITO COAST. And instead I've watched his Ryan films, that Sabrina, and Random Hearts. I've watched in sorrow as my favorite actor ever... started to cease being... my favorite actor. And it broke my heart.
Now sure... He's not for sure in on Soderbergh's TRAFFIK yet... But ya know what? If he gets in here. And he plays this role. If he takes this pay cut. Then my faith in Harrison Ford is back. Because you and I both know that Soderbergh is currently one of the most daring and brutally competent directors working in film today. He has real cinematic convictions... and he will push Ford like Harrison hasn't been pushed in over 15 years. Suddenly I have a great Harrison Ford performance to look forward to.
I knew when Harrison was looking for an agency that this meant that exciting times were ahead for him. I had hoped that it meant that Harrison realized that it was going to take more than a diamond stud in the right ear to be... cool again. God this is exciting to me. Think of how cool Soderbergh made George Clooney and Terrence Stamp look and feel. Man. Great news. Just wonderful. YEAH!
