Hey folks, Harry here... Ya know - there's a part of me that looking at the cast that Tarantino is assembling for DJANGO UNCHAINED - that is just flummoxed. I've no notion at all who I was picturing in my mind when I read DJANGO UNCHAINED. When I got the script - the word was that Will Smith was playing the titular character - but even though that was on the clothesline gossip circle, I read the script without him in mind. But you take a character like ACE WOODY, who Kevin Costner is playing - and all I can think of to compare the casting to is when Ben Johnson got cast in Peter Bogdanovich's THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. Or Jimmy Stewart in BROKEN SPUR. Or Henry Fonda in ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. This is radical casting against type. He's the Captain of the Overseers at CANDYLAND, he's pure good-ol boy sadism. Using colorful & offensive language as casually as you would imagine of a Slave Trainer that turns field hands into bloodthirsty beasts of the ring. He has some absolutely brutal sequences in this film - and I have to say - there's a part of me that hopes Quentin mines a bit of Costner's FANDANGO character, but twists its soul pitch black.
Costner joins Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L Jackson - but one thing is for sure, I imagine Kevin is doing this just to mess with all of our heads. You see, he's playing Pa Kent for Snyder before this - and so he's gonna make us love him, then love to hate him. I like that. Been a while since Costner really mixed it up! Deadline broke the story!
