One of the funniest half-hours on television returns to FX tonight as Louis CK’s hilariously depressing autobiographical sitcom “Louie” launches its second season. CK again serves as writer, director, editor and star.
Huge laughs seem to fly out of nowhere during the premiere, titled “Pregnant,” and it’s also likely the most dramatic of the series to date.
Things get funnier still in episode two with a segment titled “Blueberries” (the source of that clip) in which Louie is unexpectedly dispatched to, among other things, procure sexual lubricant and something called Vagitine.
Episode three, “Moving,” which brings back the wonderful Pam Adlon’s character, is worth tuning in for just for Louie’s wickedly acerbic diner banter with fellow comic Todd Barry. The episode then segues into a nightmare search for an affordable apartment in New York, which launches with an encounter with a too-candid bait-and-switch master and wends to an encounter with the comic’s disbelieving accountant. This was easily my favorite of the first four season-two installments.
Episode four, “Joan,” begins with a monologue about diarrhea radius and a call to someone ill-equipped to take deli orders, then the action shifts to Atlantic City, where Joan Rivers notes a comedian named “Dane Clark” is an asshole.
