Hey folks, Harry here... I loved the hell out of SUPER 8, I get to run my review on June 1st, but I have to tell you that I flipped for the film. Some will criticize the nostalgic awesome that the film plays in, but not me. I love looking back, remembering and most of all celebrating the films that inspire the artists and directors of today. SUPER 8 isn't any particular film from my past, but it conjures warm blanket awesomes from that period of film, while being an entirely new story.
SO - I proposed this screening notion. Let's watch 4 of the films from JJ Abrams list of inspirations for SUPER 8...
The event will take place on Thursday, June 2nd at the Alamo Drafthouse South here in Austin, Tx at 6:30pm. The event will take us a bit into June 3rd no doubt, so... what's screening?
We're going to start with SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE, which JJ was really fond of, in particular the unconventional score, but also - just a really really fun flick! A full on slasher film.
Next, we have what I'm hearing is a very special print of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. I'm very excited about seeing this.
Then we have a bit of a miracle, a 35mm print of David Cronenberg's SCANNERS! I haven't seen this theatrically since the Drive-In, where I saw it double-featured with TELEFON, but man... SCANNERS on the big screen.
Lastly, we got a 35mm print of John Carpenter's THE THING. Which is always a big deal!
The most special thing about this screening, is because SUPER 8 exists and because JJ named these 4 films among others as his inspiration, because the Alamo Drafthouse rules, because Paramount rented these prints - we now have a great event to enjoy in the company of huge film lovers that respect these sorts of events... that means if you get in, you're assured of a great film going experience. Which is why I'm putting this as one of the 15th Anniversary AICN events for this year. The first was the fun DRAGONSLAYER screening with Guillermo Del Toro at the Paramount Theater. Now you get 4 classic films for free!
So how do you get into this crazy fun event?
In the body of the email I want your full name, the full names of your guests (up to 2 besides you) and...
A brief essay about why you want to see these films with a respectful audience of your fellow awesome film geeks of Austin, what the films mean to you and what you hope to see reflected from these films in SUPER 8 which opens June 10th!
I will write the winners back as soon as I've filled the glory of Screen 2 at the Alamo Drafthouse - and folks, this is going to be one hell of a night of Geek Cinema!!!
