102 Dalmatians Controversy
10/01/2000
The London set of 102 Dalmatians has been thrown into chaos after it was
revealed two high profile animal charities are set to boycott the movie's
production. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and Battersea
Dogs Home are planning a demonstration against the film, which stars Glenn
Close and Gerard Depardieu in a follow-up to the 1996 live action flick 101
Dalmatians.
It was reported after the first film that huge numbers of people rushed out
to buy Dalmatian puppies, but many were ill-equipped to care properly for
the pedigree breed. According to the animal charities, huge numbers were
either mistreated or dumped in the world famous dog shelter.
The movie has also been refused permission by various dog groups to use
their emblems in the making of the film. Spokesperson for PETA Andrew Butler
says, "We are looking into the possibility of demonstration at the set. We
are planning to hold placards with `Disney are heartless about homeless
dogs' on it. "Whatever they may say, there is no doubt 101 Dalmatians
promotes pure breed, and as a result the Christmas it came out saw a rise in
unwanted dogs."
THEN CAME...
No Dog Chaos Say Source
10/01/2000
The set of 102 Dalmatians is far from chaotic, according to the film's UK
spokesperson, Vanessa Davies, who called Empire Online to straighten out
this morning's story concerning potential location demonstrations from PETA
(People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Davies assured us that
everything is going swimmingly on location in London, where principal
photography began in November and is due to finish in April.
She also explained that the filmmakers have had no direct complaints from
animal welfare groups, saying, "To our knowledge we have had no complaints
from animal welfare groups - and as a matter of fact, we work very closely
with the RSPCA to ensure the best care for the dogs in the film."
Davies also gave us an idea of the plot, which again features Glenn Close as
arch-villainess Cruela De Vil, plus Gerard Depardieu and hot Brit property
Ioan Gruffud. De Vil, fresh out of prison after her demise in 101
Dalmatians, is a changed woman, promptly buying an animal shelter and
rescuing animals. But soon little spotty puppies begin disappearing all over
again....
