Flying Up to Sundance

A solo adventure with Harry

Well, here I am. I'm writing to yall from my seat (11E) at 1550 hours (cst) aboard a Delta flight. I have just left Austin, and am pretty darn high up. The stewardesses are not that, oh my heart beats for you, let's join a mile high club type, but rather... Would you like a warm muffin, type. I have only just learned that there is an IN-FLIGHT movie, and upon my screen at this moment is a trailer for THE GAME. A David Fincher film... a film about paranoia... about falling from very very high heights... A perfect film to watch in flight. I mean, surely an overactive imagination type like me wouldn't say... ummm... possibly go wacky from watching it? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwww.

I don't think I'll pay $5 bucks for the headphones, but I will watch the silent film. I have real life out my window... A beautiful display of clouds and earth. Ya know... films never quite get this right. If you look out, there is an absolute brilliance to the clouds, a solid look with edges of tissue thinness. My God, I'm going to UTAH...

I wonder how many of these people around me are Mormans, there is an attractive fantasy type next to me, she slightly resembles the gorgeous woman that Cary Grant meets on the train in North By Northwest. Hey I wonder if I'm suppose to be Cary Grant, probably not, I don't have a great deal of Bartenders dependant upon me back home.

THE GAME just began, the jigsaw puzzle is flying at me, Fincher's historical style opening, the birthday party. The girl in front of me, also attractive, has moved her seat right into me, I can now smell her perfume... a sweet honeysuckle/rose type smell. She's nestling off to sleepy land. A lady across the row ties her shoe. My life is weird. How did I get here?

In about 2 hours, I'll be in Salt Lake City looking for the Imperial Transport to the Hoth (Sundance) Film Festival. Last night I was eating bar-b-que with Quentin, now I'm on my way to the Rockies... Jeremiah Johnson land. Cool... I really am a lucky bastard, my fortune cookie said "There is a prospect of a thrilling time ahead of you," this morning. What does that mean? Does that mean, that ol Eves Marie Saint here is destined to be my Rocky Mountain Romance, or that I'll have a 4 minute thrilling rollercoaster ride into the side of a mountain? I don't know, but I have a tomato juice drinking, Sue Grafton's "M Is For Money" reading intelligent looking cutie, and in a few hours I'LL HAVE MOUNTAINS TO HIT. Oh come to me my cumquat.

As you have no doubt noticed, I'm bored out of my goard. I don't like to travel alone, and have only done so on one occasion. That's why I'm taking you along with me, I don't have Glen to pester or Dad. Whether ya like it or not, dead or alive, you're coming with me. So I better watch the silent movie of THE GAME, I'll make up my own dialogue, it'll be like... What's Up Tiger Lily? Yeaaaaah, that's the ticket. I'll talk at ya when I see some mountains. Or if me and my fantasy romance get anywhere. Ta ta...

A really beautiful comforter of clouds hugs the earth beneath me, I wonder if it's warm under there... It has that quilted look... puts me at ease, I can't wait to get into Salt Lake City... Ta Ta

I decend into Salt Lake City. As the plane dips down over the tips of the mountains, my jaw drops. It is gorgeous, like some sort of Maxfield Parish painting, blues, purples and pinks glisten of the mountain snow and clouds that are entertwined. I've never seen anything like this, I can see roads snaking in and around, I'll be on one of those roads soon... We're landing I have to put the computer up...

My god, it is a huge damn hike through this airport. It's HUGE, makes LA's feel small. All these moving walkways, huh huh huh huh cooool. I'm walking at like twice my normal speed. Harry sets a new ground speed record for his fat ass... CHEERS erupt as Harry get's to Ground Transportation still breathing and alive.

Seems everyone is going to Park City, but none of them made their Reservations. Ha ha, 48 hours ago I did. Now I wait 20 minutes and the journey continues.

BABES everywhere, in sky outfits. slobber slobber. The all speak like the 'square-heads' in THE LONG RIDERS, I'm out of place. Oh well, more from the ground transportation

HOLY COOLNESS, the mountain mobile stops at a SINCLAIR Gas station. I didn't even know these still existed!!!! It's the Dino gas station. WOWOWOWOWOWoW, Dad is gonna shit!!! Cool, big ol brontosaurus on the great Sinclair sign.

IT is getting dark, deep blue sky with solid black sillohated mountains with a silver white lining across the top. I had two people attack me in the airport. One from MR SHOWBIZ and the other from TNT ROUGHCUT. Man, I've got a bad feeling about this. 3 of the 6 riders in the vehicle know who I am, I'm scared.

I arrive at Sundance Mission Control, the van door opens and... Snow, Ice, slippery death. I get out, knowing I'm going to fall on my ass... I step out into the real world, suddenly the icy air begins attacking the very fibre of my being, I'm a dead man, I know there is nothing I can do to save myself, I'm beginning to feel the outer layer of skin crystallize I try to walk without killing myself, it seems to be working... I MADE IT!!!

Hey that wasn't too bad. There is a rush of activity everywhere, people going in, coming out... this is going to be a nightmare... I go up to the "Information Desk" and well they didn't have any, but due to my billboard sized stature, well... My contact, a tank of a man by the name of Sherman, spots me right from the get go. Puts his arm around me, and we're the best of buds. We had talked, off and on for the past 4 months or so, and we are gauging each other, seeing if we're both full of it. Of course we are, we're supposed ta be. This town now has so much schmoozing that well, ya get a little full of it, just entering the city limits.

I'm walking around with Randy Thom (Mr Sound for CONTACT, remember that opening sequence..awwwwwwwwwww) and Sherman, we weren't traveling back in time, but we were descending into the bowels of Sundance. Here the dwarves work all day in the mines... in the mines... the f, ahhh forget it.

While registering, Wes Craven's 'people' thank me 'again and again' for not giving away the killer or (s)' Identity. They said they went to read every single day, knowing that I would spill the beans... There were delighted that I didn't. Interesting..

Next it's to the YARROW, the hotel they're putting me up in. Ahhh the luxury... My bedroom has two beds, though it is just me. You see they are already working against me. Let's say miracles occur, and a beautiful babe decides to come back to my room, let's say things are going good, let's say the night continues, let's say she decides (against her better judgement) to sleep here. THERE'S ANOTHER BED.... HOW CONVEEEEEENIANT!!! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggg!!! What an ambush!

I begin to set up the room, unpack and get the computer workstation going full speed. ACK, there's not a telephone jack!!! How do I do my reports, I call the front desk, turns out there is some sort of special device that I'm supposed to get... Well at 8 in the A.M. I will.
