So... What's Fincher looking into now'

You know... There was a time where I thought that the future of David Fincher.... and that of Steven Spielberg laid firmly in the open arms of SCIENCE FICTION.

David was supposed to do RENDEVOUS WITH RAMA.... Steven was and still might be online for MINORITY REPORT.

What happened with RENDEVOUS... is anyone's guess. As for Minority Report... well Fox and Steven are rumored to have bumped heads when Fox brass stopped holding stages for MINORITY, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 went waaay long over-production tying up Cruise, and my bet is the script has been a tough as hell adaptation... given the source material. But.. I still feel (and hope) that this film will be made.

Now... Why did I go and bring up the STEVEN when talking about Fincher?

Well... You see, currently... They are both wanting to do... HARRY POTTER. Ol Steven Kloves (screenwriter of FLESH AND BONE, FABULOUS BAKER BOYS and the rumored to be fantastic... WONDER BOYS) has (according to that cyber-railroad track) been writing a fantastic screenplay based on the insanely popular HARRY POTTER series of 'children' books.

Now, why on Earth would David 'bleak and hopeless' Fincher be interested in directing... a kiddie flick? Well, first off... Harry Potter isn't just any old kiddie book... It's really quite wonderful. But.. He seems to (at least according to my Fincher spies) be wanting to change perceptions about his 'limitations'... to flex his filmmaking boundries quite a bit. (kinda like what Robert Rodriguez is doing with SPY KIDS)

Personally... I'd love to see Fincher show that he can do more than just appeal to disenfranchised nihlists... Plus, I'd be fascinated to see someone with such an amazing visual nerve take on the Harry Potter film.

Of course... If Spielberg wants this film... I doubt quite seriously that Fincher will wind up with it. But... I think it's quite interesting that this is a property that Fincher is pursuing and following.
