New York Int'l Children's Film Festival 2011 opens March 4th. Anime content includes Time of Eve and Welcome to the Space Show

New Hayao Miyazaki shorts, House Hunting and Mon Mon the Water Spider, will be shown outside Japan for the first time outside Japan at New York's Zankel Hall On Saturday, March 26
as part of Carnegie Hall’s Citywide JapanNYC Festival
Tickets for the Zankel Hall film screenings, priced at $15, will go on sale Tuesday, March 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the Carnegie Hall Box Office, by calling CarnegieCharge at 212-247-7800, or online at carnegiehall.org.
House Hunting and Mon Mon the Water Spider are two of eight short animated films created specifically for the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan, by Studio Ghibli, the animation studio that Miyazaki co-founded in 1985. These short films may only be seen at the Ghibli Museum, which was founded in 2001 to celebrate, preserve, and introduce people of all ages to the techniques and culture of traditional hand-drawn animation. In cooperation with Carnegie Hall, the Ghibli Museum has made a one-time-only exception to its screening policy for the JapanNYC festival.
Both House Hunting and Mon Mon the Water Spider share a common feature in that they do not make use of spoken dialogue to convey their story or theme. And each in its own way represents two divergent thematic and stylistic characteristics of Japanese art and culture: the indigenous traditional culture of Japanese folk art, and the more elaborate and refined art influenced by borrowings from foreign cultures. House Hunting employs a bold and somewhat simplified style and owes much to the influence of manga, including the use of visual representation of sound effects. Mon Mon the Water Spider is more Western-influenced, both in its style and its story and theme.
The JapanNYC festival explores the world of Japan today, where artists embrace their country’s unique aesthetic sensibilities while continually revitalizing its cultural landscape. Led by famed conductor Seiji Ozawa as Artistic Director, JapanNYC celebrates a country that values its long-standing cultural heritage while also embracing and transforming Western art forms, in a spirit that very much looks ahead. House Hunting
(Japanese title: Yado-Sagashi)
Fuki packs what she needs into a big rucksack and sets out on a journey to look for a new house. She leaves the city and heads off into the mountains. Along the way, she encounters some of Japan’s many guardian spirits and leaves them each a token offering. And then she finds a place that’s just right. Or is it? In this short film all of the sound effects are voiced by two actors. Sometimes the Japanese onomatopoeic sounds—sounds that are meant to imitate the things that make them—appear as Japanese letters on the screen. But whether you understand Japanese or not, the sounds in the film speak for themselves.

Mon Mon the Water Spider
(Japanese title: Mizugumo Monmon)
Water spiders are unique creatures that live in ponds and streams in northern Japan. In this film, Mon Mon, a water spider, travels back and forth to the surface of the water gathering bubbles of air, and drags them back down below where he uses them as both air supply and nest, all the while keeping a sharp lookout for predators. One day, Mon Mon spies a damsel water strider gliding freely and effortlessly across the water’s surface and cannot take his eyes off of her. He thinks of her after she has glided away out of sight and almost forgets to be cautious and wary. Could this graceful, free-moving beauty ever come to love a homely, ungainly water spider chained to his nest of bubbles? When he sees her in danger and rises to the rescue, he gets a chance to see her world as she does.

VIZ Media has announced the availability of anime series HIKARU NO GO and MÄR for Download-To-Rent / Download-To-Own (DTR/DTO) from iTunes, PlayStation Network, and Amazon Video on Demand.

HIKARU NO GO is a unique story that revolves around the ancient Japanese strategy game of Go, and is based on the manga written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata (also published domestically by VIZ Media). Hikaru Shindo is like any sixth-grader in Japan: a pretty normal kid with a two-tone head of hair and a penchant for antics. However, the producers of MAGNOS took the bizarre visuals and childish storylines of your typical robot drama and cranked everything up to eleven – and as with all kitsch, their efforts had the opposite effect. Oji Suzuki’s A Single Match, shares in this tradition. Suzuki’s stories are largely grounded in a post-WWII small town world with distinct flashes of surrealist imagery representing the emotional states of the characters. The lines of reality and fantasy are so blurred that initial readings of each story leave the reader less sure of what happened plot-wise but certain what happened emotionally (I actually think this emotionality is one of the defining features of these great Japanese comics. Rarely have I been so thoroughly moved by what I’ve read than when I read gekiga.).
