Sundance Report #4: TOO TIRED TO DIE and some biz...

Here comes a report from our spy from the other day, this time on TOO TIRED TO DIE, the Mira Sorvino flick I reported on way back when. Well... IT's Alive!!!

Another report from Sundance for you. I'll try to keep a better eye on my spelling this time. Last night I saw TOO TIRED TO DIE which I first read about on your page so many months ago. This movie stars that dude from CHUNKING EXPRESS and Mira Sorvino (the credits said "Introducing Mira Sorvino", does this mean it was her first role and that it just didn't get released until now?).

Anyway, Sorvino plays Death who has come to take away this poor lad named Kenji. Since Death is a nice gal, she gives Kenji 12 hours advance warning. She is hoping Kenji will live those final 12 hours to the fullest.

The movie starts off with a very funny prologue shot like an old silent movie (academy ratio, sepia tones--the whole bit). The full-on color cinematography is great, too. I mean, it looked really, really good. The actual telling of the story, alas, just didn't do it for me. It had a very slow place and the film seemed to consist merely of a series loosely connected vignettes involving Kenji in his final 1/2 day of life. Nothing much really happened.

The film guide said that TOO TIRED TO DIE's director was the heir apparent to Hal Hartley. Well, Mr. Hartley has made some clunkers too, so I wouldn't feel too bad. There was some funny stuff in TTTD, but by the "heartrending" climax I was just too bored to care.

Tonight I see GODS & MONSTERS (which I also first heard about on your page) and WICKED. Your page is still the best. Thank you.

Slalom E reported in with this little 'biz' report...

I am at the festival at Sundance and have been having a wild time. Going to screenings, going to parties and gorging myself on appetizers. Here's what I've heard:

"Wicked" was sold before the festival for a serious sum of money. "Next Stop Wonderland" was sold for $7 million in a three picture deal that includes two movies by Brad Anderson, the director. (That's a third-hand rumour). Favorite movie so far was "Dead Man's Curve". Great movie, a suspense thriller starring Matthew Lillard about guys who kill their roommates (Maybe?) in college. I think it will do well. They also had the best party. Great buzz on the street. People were at the party from ABC, E!, Access Hollywood, People, Enteratinment Weekly and GQ. I also heard they were speaking to TriStar, Miramax, Fine-Line and October. Back to the slopes.
