Is A MONSTERS Sequel On The Way??

Merrick here...

One of last year's wonderful little film treasures -  one that has remained widely unseen by many folks to date - was MONSTERS, from writer/director Gareth Edwards.  It's highly atmospheric, offers a surprising sense of scale considering its extremely low budget, and is far more character driven than one might expect for a film of its ilk.  It is, simply, the tale of two people trying to make their way out of region that has been locked down/quarantined in the slipstream of dangerous extraterrestrial presence.

DreadCentral spoke with Edwards about the movie, which looks like it may soon be sequelized  - without Edwards' involvement.  He is, however, refreshingly gracious about the notion.

Now that Monsters has made its way to DVD and Blu-ray, Edwards weighed in on the future of the world he created. “Vertigo owns the rights to Monsters, and I know they’re keen to move forward with another Monsters-related project very soon. I’m not sure how involved I can be right now, and I don’t think my next film really should be a sequel just yet. I’d like to do something else first, but I would definitely be open to returning at some point.

“But I do think whoever Vertigo ends up hiring will do a great job because they really know what they’re doing there. For me, if they hire someone to direct another Monsters movie, the last thing they need is for me to be hanging around, telling people how the movie should be. Whoever comes in should definitely be given free rein to put their own spin on this world, and I know they’ll get the right person,” Edwards added.

If you haven't seen MONSTERS yet, consider checking it out via Netflix - of Blu-Rays can be had HERE (the HD version I watched a few months back via XBOX Live looked really nice - I'm guessing the Blu-Ray would as well).

Check out more of DC's interesting discussion with Edwards HERE, where he also offers a vote of confidence of the still-in-development GODZILLA movie he was recently brought in to direct.
