Sigh... Folks, Harry here. The following comes from a fella that was... quite unhappy by what he saw of the X-MEN costumes in the movie. Now we have had a description of some of the costumes over at Corona Coming Attractions as well as the word coming from Patrick that the trailer will be arriving in December, possibly with BICENTENNIAL MAN (a suggested attachment... not guaranteed yet)... but here... Our man on the inside has had a look at some early publicity work which featured the costumes and... whew... Now, I'm still reserving judgement till I see it with my own eyes, but... man... if the costumes do suck... This is going to be a long trip for fans. When will Marvel learn that the reasons that DC's SUPERMAN and BATMAN franchises worked so well (when they were working well) was because they didn't care if the costumes looked weird. It's just a part of the FANTASY UNIVERSE these characters exist in. In the MARVEL UNIVERSE folks put on long johns and goofy belts and underwear on the outside of leotards and kickass for truth and justice and freedom and all that rah rah stuff. Sigh... Well, as Patrick at COMING ATTRACTIONS said, and I agree... there will be costume changes that perhaps were not reflected in the materials our spy had access to. Please... I just want this to be good.
I know you've been reserving some of your judgment on the early film stuff based on what the costumes look like and I have to tell you.....they are bad ,really bad!
When I was told I could check out the costumes I was going into this with an open mind. I wanted to try to like these costumes, I really did but alas that was not possible! It is now obvious that Hollywood will never ,ever make an even close to faithful adaption of a high profile Marvel property.
I don't know who designed these costumes but they have never picked up a comic book in their life. I'll break it down as best as I can from what I've seen. The best looking is Cyclops who basically has a black leather motorcycle suit and a gray visor. It's not horrible but there are no x's on it at all, he Jean Grey ,Rouge and Storm are all similar in that it's just the MC suits and that's about it. Jean's hair is red ,Storm's white and she has a cape.(it doesn't connect to her wrists though) Rouge wears a sort of trench coat and does not have the white stripe in her hair. Next on the list is Mystique who for the most part walks around the movie half naked in a g-string like outfit. She has very short cropped red hair and scales like a lizard all over her blue skinned body, then we have Magneto who looks horrible. He wears a very boring suit-like costume with a cape. He has the helmet but it is god-awful . It fits very tight to his head and looks like it is made of rubber. Magneto just looks like an old man in a very plain suit with a goofy helmet(from what I'm told he won't wear often). Sabretooth has a long brown trenchcoat, black claws on his fingers ,long hair with sideburns and for some strange reason a very big bad-looking neanderthal type forhead. He looks alot like chaka from land of the lost! Next we have the worst offender of all the Toad! He literally looks like a guy who just walked off the street! All he has is gray pants, a gray sweat hood and a winter jacket looking vest!!! Finally we have Wolverine. I first must say that from the pictures I've seen the casting on him was ridiculous. He is tall, thin, young and very much a pretty boy. Definitely not the rough and rugged runt we've all come to know and love! He has the Wolvie pointed hairstyle but without of the rest of his attributes matching up it just comes out looking ridiculous. He also ends up in the very generic MC suit the rest of the X-men have.
It looks to me like the X-men costumes are all slightly modified versions of street clothes and don't look like the X-men costumes or for that matter even superhero costumes at all. I have no idea what the director was thinking when he picked this project but I do know that what he is making is definitely not the X-men movie we have all been waiting for! Looks like another disappointment for fan-boys everywhere!
By the way I also hear that the promotional poster will be a big silver vault-like door with an x on it opened slightly with a little light shining through. As the movie gets closer to release later posters will have the door opening more and more until you can get a peek at the X-men themselves. In my opinion if the public gets a look at those costumes they will be doing their best to keep that door shut and weld it closed!
