First off, I want to thank everyone involved with the Alamo Drafthouse West Oaks, Charlene Gallagher, the Alamo PR and Events Representative, the manager at the Alamo Drafthouse West Oaks, and everyone who attended tonight's GREEN HORNET screening. It was an amazing time tonight, and I enjoyed meeting everyone. The crowd had a blast and applauded the film. I'm telling you, THE GREEN HORNET's a blast and Michel Gondry's use of 3D is impressive. The film's really made to be seen that way, and each shot is composed with 3D in mind, and the end results are spectacular. I really want to do more screenings here in Houston, and I hope everyone had as wonderful a time as I did.
Now, I haven't seen any 3D films since TRON: LEGACY in theaters, so I don't know of these trailers are attached to any other films right now. I'm sure someone in Talkback will let me know if they are. But tonight we got three special treats - the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, the TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON, and THOR trailers... all in spectacular 3D.
As I'm pretty sure the PIRATES trailer's played in front of TRON, I'm not sure if the other two have played anywhere. But they both looked amazing. If you haven't seen the trailers before now:
In the TRANSFORMERS trailer, the 3D is amazing, especially when the camera pans over the hill to show the derelict robot buried in the moon sand. As the camera dives into the eye of the robot, the 3D feels truly immersive and as metal parts form the title they come flying at the screen. Now, I'm on record as not enjoying the second TRANSFORMERS film, but I think I'm going to definitely give this a shot.
But THOR... oh dear Lord, THOR.
THOR had to be shot with 3D in mind, and it shows. The sweeping vistas of Asgard are glorious. People have complained online that the Asgard scenes look hokey, but with the scope of 3D behind it... it looks unlike anything we've seen so far. And Thor's hammer comes flying at the screen and it looks damn beautiful. Again, maybe these trailers have screened before in 3D in front of other films, and I'm late to the game. So be it.
Both trailers, I believe, are attached to THE GREEN HORNET when it opens next week. The movie's worth the ticket, but these trailers are the icing on the cake, in my opinion. THE GREEN HORNET's 3D done right, and if these trailers are any indication, Michael Bay and Kenneth Branagh have brought their visual gifts to the medium in a big way. Can't wait for the summer.
