Golden Globes Announced! Social Network and Black Swan are cool, but True Grit can go fuck itself, apparently.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The Golden Globes have been announced and I'm going to throw together some thoughts and put them on display! (Yes, I know the formatting is messed up and I apologize for that, but there's still a lot of bugs in this system... if it's any consolation, the preview on the admin side looks beautiful).

BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

  • Black Swan
  • The Fighter
  • Inception
  • The King's Speech
  • The Social Network

I've seen them all, they're all great movies, but I'd swap out The King's Speech for True Grit.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

  • Halle Berry (Frankie and Alice)
  • Nicole Kidman (The Rabbit Hole)
  • Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone)
  • Natalie Portman (The Black Swan)
  • Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine)

Another strong list. I didn't see Frankie and Alice, but all the rest I can vouch for. I'd say this is Natalie Portman's to lose right now, but I could see Kidman or Lawrence sneaking out an underdog victory.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

  • Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network)
  • Colin Firth (The King's Speech)
  • James Franco (127 Hours)
  • Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine)
  • Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter)

Another strong one. I'd give it to Eisenberg because he's such a perfect match of material and actor and does some incredibly subtle stuff in that flick. I'd love to see Franco take it, though. Oh, and Aaron Eckhart can go suck an egg, I guess.

BEST MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

  • Alice In Wonderland
  • Burlesque
  • The Kids Are All Right
  • Red
  • The Tourist

Wait, this is a joke, right? Red is good fun, but we have Alice and Burlesque nominated in this category? Really? I guess there weren't a lot of musicals this year and they had to have one in there to justify the title of the award... Burlesque, really? Looking below and seeing that they give a nom to Emma Stone, why isn't Easy A on the above list? Or Love and Other Drugs? Or Casino Jack? Bur-fucking-lesque?

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

  • Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right)
  • Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs)
  • Angelina Jolie (The Tourist)
  • Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right)
  • Emma Stone (Easy A)

If I were God of the Globes, Anne Hathaway takes this one, no competition.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

  • Johnny Depp (Alice in Wonderland)
  • Johnny Depp (The Tourist)
  • Paul Giamatti (Barney's Version)
  • Jake Gyllenhaal (Love and Other Drugs)
  • Kevin Spacey (Casino Jack)

I love Johnny Depp, but even I have to double-take at his double-nom here. Spacey was great in Casino Jack and Gyllenhaal gave a fantastic, nuanced performance in Love and Other Drugs. I'd give it to Gyllenhaal out of that list.

BEST SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS - DRAMA

  • Amy Adams (The Fighter)
  • Helena Bonham Carter (The King's Speech)
  • Mila Kunis (Black Swan)
  • Melissa Leo (The Fighter)
  • Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom)

Glad to see Animal Kingdom get some love. Jacki Weaver is fantastic in that flick, Amy Adams was great in The Fighter, as was Melissa Leo and Mila Kunis... well, she should win the world as far as I'm concerned. Helena Bonham Carter was charming in The King's Speech, but she stole this spot from Hailee Steinfeld, who turns in one of the best child performances in the history of film as Mattie Ross in True Grit. Boo on you, Helena Bonham Carter!

BEST SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR - DRAMA

  • Christian Bale (The Fighter)
  • Michael Douglas (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps)
  • Andrew Garfield (The Social Network)
  • Jeremy Renner (The Town)
  • Geoffrey Rush (The King's Speech)

If the HFPA were fuckin' professional they'd give this to the obvious choice: Christian Bale. I love you Andrew Garfield (although you should have gotten this nom for Never Let Me Go, not The Social Network), Jeremy Renner and Geoffrey Rush, but this is Bale's award.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

  • Despicable Me
  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • The Illusionist
  • Tangled
  • Toy Story 3

This is a fight between How to Train Your Dragon and Toy Story 3 in my eyes. Tangled was surprisingly good, but those two films are a cut above. Toy Story 3 gave a satisfying conclusion to a groundbreaking trilogy of family entertainment and How to Train Your Dragon is an amazing fantasy spectacle that has real world consequences and cute widdle draggy-wagons.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

  • Biutiful
  • The Concert
  • The Edge
  • I Am Love
  • In A Better World

I'm usually better at having seen the foreign noms, but of this list I've only see Biutiful and that movie bored me to death. I don't have an opinion on this yet. I have a screener of I Am Love somewhere, so I'll give it a watch soon.

BEST DIRECTOR - MOTION PICTURE

  • Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan)
  • David Fincher (The Social Network)
  • Tom Hooper (The King's Speech)
  • Christopher Nolan (Inception)
  • David O. Russell (The Fighter)

Strong competition this year. Still, Hooper over the Coens? No Boyle for 127 Hours? If any of the others win I'm happy, but I'm leaning towards Aronofsky for what he pulled off visually with Black Swan.

BEST SCREENPLAY - MOTION PICTURE

  • Simon Beaufoy, Danny Boyle (127 Hours)
  • Christopher Nolan (Inception)
  • Stuart Blumberg, Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right)
  • David Seidler (The King's Speech)
  • Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network)

If Aaron Sorkin doesn't win this one there'll be hell to pay! But I can see giving it to Nolan for crafting such a complex and intricate world and keeping it (mostly) straight.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE - MOTION PICTURE

  • Alexandre Desplat (The King's Speech)
  • Danny Elfman (Alice In Wonderland)
  • A.R. Rahman (127 Hours)
  • Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network)
  • Hans Zimmer (Inception)

This category confuses me. Daft Punk (Tron Legacy) and Carter Burwell (True Grit) shunned for a nom for The King's Speech and Alice In Wonderland? Whhhaaaaaa? Not that it really matters as this is a foot race between Reznor/Ross and Zimmer anyway... I guess it'll come down to full score (I'd give it to Reznor/Ross) or cultural impact (Zimmer's Inception score is iconic). I love them both and can make arguments for either, but if I was forced to choose, I'd go Reznor/Ross.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG - MOTION PICTURE

  • "Bound to You" - Burlesque
  • "Coming Home" - Country Strong
  • "I See The Light" - Tangled
  • "There's A Place For Us" - Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Don't care about any of them (What the hell is Country Strong?), but of them all I liked Tangled the best, so I'll go with Tangled.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA

  • Boardwalk Empire
  • Dexter
  • The Good Wife
  • Mad Men
  • The Walking Dead

I love that the Drama category has two horror shows on it. Way to go Walking Dead and Dexter! Boardwalk Empire is also great and I'm stupidly way behind on Mad Men. I plan on educating myself over the holidays.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA

  • Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
  • Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)
  • Piper Perabo (Covert Affairs)
  • Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy)
  • Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)

No opinion on this one, sorry for being a lame TV viewer.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA

  • Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire)
  • Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
  • Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
  • Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
  • Hugh Laurie (House)

This is more my speed. Bryan Cranston for the win! Breaking Bad wins at life! Buscemi is great, Hall and Laurie are solid and, I'm told, Hamm is brilliant.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

  • 30 Rock
  • The Big Bang Theory
  • The Big C
  • Glee
  • Modern Family
  • Nurse Jackie

This list is nullified by the exclusion of Community. Fail.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

  • Toni Collette (United States of Tara)
  • Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
  • Tina Fey (30 Rock)
  • Laura Linney (The Big C)
  • Lea Michele (Glee)

Again, exclusion of Community doesn't make a lick of sense. In absense of a superior TV comedy, I like me my Tina Fey.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

  • Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
  • Steve Carell (The Office)
  • Thomas Jane (Hung)
  • Matthew Morrison (Glee)
  • Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)

I'm not really invested in any of the nominees here, but I quite like Alec Baldwin on 30 Rock. Carell is solid on The Office, but hasn't blown me away this season.

BEST MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

  • Carlos
  • The Pacific
  • Pillars of the Earth
  • Temple Grandin
  • You Don't Know Jack

The Pacific has my vote, but I once again find myself woefully behind on TV stuffs.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

  • Hayley Atwell (Pillars of the Earth)
  • Claire Danes (Temple Grandin)
  • Judi Dench (Return to Cranford)
  • Romola Garai (Emma)
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt (The Client List)

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

  • Idris Elba (Luther)
  • Ian McShane (Pillars of the Earth)
  • Al Pacino (You Don't Know Jack)
  • Dennis Quaid (The Special Relationship)
  • Edgar Ramirez (Carlos)

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

  • Hope Davis (The Special Relationship)
  • Jane Lynch (Glee)
  • Kelly MacDonald (Boardwalk Empire)
  • Julia Stiles (Dexter)
  • Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)

Hey, there's Kelly MacDonald. I was wondering when she'd pop up. She's great on Boardwalk, one of my favorite performances in the series.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

  • Scott Caan (Hawaii Five-O)
  • Chris Colfer (Glee)
  • Chris Noth (The Good Wife)
  • Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
  • David Strathairn (Temple Grandin)

And that's the noms. Thoughts?
