Sigh.
I swear to lord almighty, please prevent Barry Sonnenfeld from touching this property. A soul-less glossy comedic smug twist on SPIDER-MAN is so far from what I want to see. I'm not speaking for all you readers out there, you can do that for yourself in TALK BACK... But... For me, having Barry Sonnenfeld coming up with a Mad Scientist character of his own devices with which to pit Spider-Man against.... well it chills me to the bone.
Barry used to be a really wonderful DP. That was long ago now, his films are dead without any passion at all. So cold. He's a director for the DC universe from the 50's... not the Marvel Age. Ya know, back about 2 years ago Robert Rodriguez really wanted to do SPIDER-MAN... Now he's going to do MADMAN instead. Sigh. My first choice is still Scorsese. It'd be his chance to make his New York fantasy. It'd be something... wonderful. The following is from a fellow that overheard a lunch... It's unconfirmed... treat it as pure rumor. One of those alleged things. But... ugh...
Harry,
Love your site, and thought I would drop a line about the Spider-Man movie. I was eating in a nice little cafe in Brentwood when I over-heard the person behind me claim to be an assistant to Barry Sonnefeld, and the person at the table with him (another assistant of someone, I didn't catch the name) asked if Sonnefeld was interested in doing Spider-Man.
The assistant stated that "Barry" would love to make the Spider-Man film. When asked what villian would be used by his dining companion, the assistant replied that "Barry" would rather use a "mad scientist angle" for the villian. "Like the Octopus guy?" asked the other diner. "No, it would be someone Barry and the writers would create," the assistant replied. "Well, whatever," the other diner replied (my thoughts exactly).
I don't know if these two guys were legit or not, but they were both dressed nice and in the right part of town, so who knows? Just thought I'd let you know. Personally, I think a Spidey-movie is gonna suck no matter what.
