Well, it seems Babs Bunny, Bug's niece he always visits when he makes that wrong turn, has taken a look at Dreamworks' latest animated film... THE ROAD TO EL DORADO. I've only seen a few bits a pieces... and then anyone that bought the PRINCE OF EGYPT dvd could see the combo trailer of that and CHICKEN RUN. Pretty stuff, but I've been very curious to hear how it came out since it was a lighter confection than THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, and I guess I'm pleased to here no complaints about it being Diney-ish... which is my main fear at this point. We'll see, I look forward to it. Oh... does anyone know if that TIGGER movie of Disney's is being put up against this Dreamworks film? Somehow I imagine it is counter-programming... hmmm...
Harry,
i always read about test screenings on your site, but i've never had the chance to to one-- i guess albuquerque is not exactly where its at in that regard. but i finally got my chance this weekend!
i got to the theater to find it was a screening of DW's EL DORADO. the film is visually stunning--lots of forest scenes, a computer animated opening where the world turns to gold, lots of cool landscapes of the actual city of gold. i thought it was really beautiful. the story is about two guys from spain who steal a map to a mystical city made of gold, el dorado and then dodge the cops by getting on a boat to the new world, where they escape with a horse (as far as animal sidekicks go, not Jar-Jar binks but kind of close). once there, they find the new world while we hum along to elton john...
once it got to el dorado, the action slowed a bit while we got to know the guys, met a semi-irritating sidekick called Cheal, who is there to attract the little girlies if i had to guess. the guy said it was a rough cut so hopefully they'll loose some of this part... another song. shots of gold, gold, and more gold. it's pretty funny and the villian is great. he's this angry magic man who wants our heroes to join his bloodlust for sacrifices and once his revenge fantasies get going, the movie rocks. he rigs a game of pre-milleneum soccer, turns into a pissed off stone lizard. good action. threatening and exciting. more good music. the heroes save the day, the city and the gold and then leave to go on a direct-to-video adventure, the way the film's is left open.
overall a lot of fun. they said it comes out in march. it will be fun to see what changes. my little brothers will go. so will their pokemaniac friends.
to more albuerquerque screenings,
Babs Bunny
