Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
I love hearing from make-up people and I love ‘em even more when they send in pics for this column. I’m going to have to hit up a lot of my make-up effects buddies for coming additions to the BtSPotD column, but today I have a special treat for you.
Tom Sullivan, one of the make-up artists on the original EVIL DEAD, sent in a shot of him working on Betsy Baker during the filming of Sam Raimi’s classic. Check out his website here.
Here’s the note I received:
Quint, I did the make up and special effects for Evil Dead and I wanted to share this picture of mine with the fans at Ain't It Cool.
It is of me applying make up on actress, Betsy Baker creating the infection of Linda's leg after the pencil attack. The actual stop motion infection shot would be completed six months later with Cheryl Gutteridge "fake shemping" as Linda's leg.
After a 90 minute stop motion shot where I painted the infection spreading on her leg, frame by frame, Cheryl leaned over and threw up. I found out her leg had gone to sleep and being the trooper she didn't' complain or move until the shoot was over. I felt terrible but the shot is great.
The picture was taken in May of 1980 at Producer, Rob Tapert's family farmhouse south of Marshall, Michigan.
Take care,
Tom Sullivan
And here’s the photo that came with it, a rare look behind the scenes of one of the best indie horror films to ever find an audience!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Thanks for sending in the picture, Tom!
Tomorrow’s pic goes full circle, connecting back to the very first October 1st entry of the all horror month of BtSPotD! It’s a beaut!
