Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
I’ve been going a little THING crazy for the last week as I wrote up my big set visit piece on the prequel and worked on the multiple one-on-one interviews that’ll be debuting shortly, so naturally I’ve had Carpenter’s The Thing on my mind quite a bit.
Since I’m in a monster mood this October and I love Rob Bottin to death, why not dedicate a little slice of BtSPotD to his groundbreaking work in John Carpenter’s The Thing.
This is what happens when a talented filmmaker sets out to make a gore picture at the same time as a character study. I think THE THING should be taught to up and coming horror filmmakers as an example of how to take your subject seriously, set it in a real-world scenario, but still go as insane and entertaining with the make-up and animatronic effects as your budget will allow.
It’s the gold standard as far as I’m concerned. The only movie that strikes a balance that well was another 1982 release, Poltergeist. Both were formative movies for me as a young man and both still stand as favorites not just in the genre but of all cinema.
So, here’s a little slice of Bottin touching up the fucked up meldy-face Norwegian discovered by MacReady. This was an early reader submission and I lost track of who exactly sent this in, so my apologies to the constant reader who sent the pic. Enjoy!
If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic features a dancing fish. No joke.
