FATHER GEEK here with one more itty bitty look at the film that just wouldn't go away no matter how much some people wanted to...
Hello Harry I'm a big fan of the site. I saw an advanced screening og Dogma at my college last week. Like most everybody else on the site I'm a huge fan of Kevin Smith. Like El Cosimico I had read the draft on the net. I thought the script was fantastic and possibly Smith's best work.
However the movie dissapointed me. It is a decent film but it wasn't nearly as good as the draft I read. I think the main problem is that Smith had to cut the length and it shows. The film is choppy oddly paced and feels rushed. It didn't have the grand vision that the script seemed to imply. The acting ranged from awesome to awful. I thought Affleck and Rickman and Lee were great but Fiorentino and Salma Hayeck were awful neither one of them have ever been this bad. Damon, Rock were typical and Carlin's material was almost completely cut. As always Jay and Silent Bob were cool(but you already knew that.)
By the way there is a great Indiana Jones reference. There used to be a great Star Wars religion debate in the movie but that was cut.
All in all the film was edited down way too much and that makes the current cut drag because it never really clicks together. To be fair I'm going to see this again this weekend and I may change my mind because I tend to do that. Don't get me wrong it is definitely worth seeing but a dissapointment.
