Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say this is going to be one of the smaller talkbacks in this column’s history. For whatever reason Preston Sturges hasn’t found the same kind of recognition that his contemporaries like Billy Wilder and Frank Capra have.
Don’t think I’m trying to appear all superior for loving Sturges. I’m a new convert myself, having recently jumped into Sturges’ filmography with great zeal. I’m kind of high on the guy. His sense of comedic timing, his use of the same key (and very funny) cast and the overall tone of every one of his films is like crack to me.
Sorry to throw in a link here, but if you haven’t seen any Preston Sturges at all, please do yourself a favor and buy this DVD set. You’ll thank me later.
Then go to Netflix Instant and add this movie, Unfaithfully Yours, to your queue.
It’s my personal favorite of all his films and had me laughing more than any recent comedy. Most people tend to list either Sullivan’s Travels or The Lady Eve as the best Sturges. I love them both, even if I tend to lean more towards Unfaithfully Yours’ crazy set-up.
The Lady Eve is what we’re focusing on for the pic today. I’m afraid it’s not the ideal awesome BTS image, but it is Preston Sturges goofing around with Barbara Stanwyck, so it ain’t too shabby either.
In the flick Stanwyck plays a seductive con artist trying to pull a fast one on Henry Fonda’s Charles Pike, a rich, but odd young man obsessed with snakes. They meet on a boat and as you’d imagine the con artist falls in love and that changes the game.
It’s a crazy comedy, but like the best of Sturges’ films there’s a lot of heart to it. I’ve only recently begun digging into Stanwyck’s films and this is the best I’ve seen her so far. She can sometimes come off as very cold, but here she’s incredibly warm. Big fan of this flick.
So, here’s the pic! Enjoy!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic has a whale of a tale to tell ya’, lads. A whale of a tale indeed.
