7 GIRL FRIENDS can use a little help

Here's a review of a little comedy made by several experienced TV pros. I'm not sure, but Father Geek smells an expanded sitcom for the mall multiplex, it's got a market out there, but I don't know if we really need it blown up on the big screen... I vote for direct to video.

Hello, this is the Valiant Vandal. I am here to report on the World Premiere of a film that is still seeking distribution. I saw the film on Saturday at the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival, and it is called, "7 Girlfriends." It was directed, produced, and co-written by Paul Lazarus. Paul is a longtime, experienced television sitcom director for shows like Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, and other shows of that sort. The film stars two television stars as well, Tim Daly (the cleaner looking brother from Wings, and Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde) and Laura Leighton (the redhead on Melrose Place).

The film centers around Tim Daly who has an experience that makes him realize his inability to keep a relationship. He leaves town to go to a funeral, and decides to meet all of his serious girlfriends from the past along the way. He wants to talk to all of his old girlfrends and find out the real reasons for their breakup and maybe find out why he still hasn't found that 'one.'

Although the plot may seem thin, and it stars Tim Daly, the movie is a wonderfully hilarious movie that never stops providing funny situations. Tim Daly provides an arrogant charm that pushes the film along quite nicely, and we are able to relate to a real person, not just a 2-dimensional flake. All of the supporting women give in great comedic performances, and there is a totally unexpected scene with Mimi Rogers that sent the audience in an uproar of laughter and disgust. This is also not a pg-13 film, while there are scenes of nudity and sexual situations, it is not thrown at you in the immature stylings of American Pie. The scenes are actually unexpected, and handled with finesse by the actors.

Unfortunately, this is a very hard movie to sell being that there is NO star in the movie that pulls audiences in to see it. The audience loved the film, but it doesn't seem like any distributors were interested. It may end up on HBO,or some other cable TV spot, but it really does deserve a theatrical release. I am hoping the best for cast and crew, due to the tremendous amount of effort put into this totally unexpected movie.

I am going down to the Festival again tonight to see it again with some other friends. It really is a good film to see with an audience, so I hope the best, and if you see it playing at any other festivals, make sure not to miss it for it needs all the help it can get with word of mouth. I have said too much....
