It’s about time we feature John Woo. I’m sorry this pic from Hard Boiled doesn’t have any flying doves in it, but it does have John Woo holding a gun on one of his actors, so there’s that.
I was in my teens when I finally started taking in John Woo’s Hong Kong craziness. The Killer and Hard Boiled were watched back to back if my hazy memory is accurate and I loved them both. Both movies represented a radically different kind of filmmaking than I was used to.
While The Killer is fantastic, Hard Boiled won out if only for the insanity of the hospital scene. Chow Yun-Fat is great in these movies… He has a Han Solo cocksure ease in these early films that just makes you want to watch the dude all day long.
