Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
I couldn’t ignore the easy jump from yesterday’s Pan’s Labyrinth to today’s Labyrinth, so forgive my nostalgia and still confused puberty emotions (pubertemotions?) surrounding Jim Henson’s classic tale of Fantasy starring an impossibly gorgeous Jennifer Connelly and co-starring David Bowie’s impossibly ginormous package.
The picture is small, but good. Jim Henson and Hoggle, one of the best animatronic faces ever. I always bought Hoggle as a character… the lip movements were surprisingly realistic, much like Henson’s work on Audrey II in THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Very fluid and natural. If you can nail the eyes and the lips the effect will work.
This marks the second time Henson has appeared in this column and it won’t be the last. Thinking back on what he did with this movie, the Muppet Movies and his influence in what Frank Oz did with The Dark Crystal really makes me mourn the movies we could have gotten if he hadn’t left us so early.
