We continue our ode to The Empire Strikes Back’s 30th Birthday with this spectacular shot from the climactic (and revealing) duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. This is moments before Luke loses a hand, but gains a father.
I’ve posted a lot of glorious BTS pics, but I will say that this photo is the first since the rad Alien picture that started this column to give me that same feeling of a moment of cinema history being captured by an onset photographer. There are precious few pictures that feels like you’re just pulling back beyond the frame and seeing the crew create the magic in plain view. This is one of those pictures.
