SNL: The Best of Will Ferrell Vol. 3 supplies more evidence to refute the notion that SNL hasn’t been funny in years. BUSH ENDORSEMENT A sketch from SNL Primetime Thursday broadcast Oct 23, 2008. “I’ve just been told by my trusted aide Jeff that the country is actually in a horrible downward spiral and that my approval numbers are lower than ever.” Ferrell’s W returns to weigh in on “the hot lady and the Tiger Woods guy.” “So sorry, Asian markets, you take the hit on this one.” Tina Fey turns up as Sarah Palin. She is hilarious explaining McCain’s absence. “George Bush always finds his man except for one huge exception.” THEATRE MONOLOGUE “Please, no laughter!” Ferrell, five years beyond “Anchorman,” wears a big scarf to open the May 16, 2009 SNL season finale, the episode that brought together with Anne Hathaway, Elizabeth Moss, Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Artie Lange, Norm Macdonald and Tom Hanks (none of whom appear on this disc). It ran the night Fox broadcast the horrible final episode of “Mad TV.” “Drowning in that think Irish disappointment of yours!” GOULET’S NEW BAG Ringtones and a ram! A sketch from Ferrell’s first turn as guest host on May 14, 2005. “I’ve got a mind to eat you whole, my old friend!” CELEBRITY JEOPARDY Bill Cosby (Kenan Thompson), Sharon Osbourne (Amy Poehler) and Sean Connery (Darrell Hammond) compete in the 2005 show. Connery takes “Jap-Anus Relations” for $200. Cosby wagers “bleeble blabble.” THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW “I like can I touch!!” The 2009 show puts Ferrell together with Welk’s sister act. CHEERLEADERS CHESS An ancient sketch from Jan. 20, 1996 featuring Cheri Oteri, Mark McKinney and Funky Cold Medina. FAMILY DINNER “I just wish you weren’t a liar!” Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ana Gasteyer star in a sketch from Jan. 17, 1998. NBA ON TNT “I love you too, Charles Barkley!” More from the 2009 show: Bill Hader and Kenan Thompson play sportscasters dealing with an intrusive promo for a new family sitcom called “Mark,” from the creators of “Jeff.” INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO “I wouldn’t want to burn monkeys.” Drew Barrymore (Kate Hudson) receives the full James Lipton slathering in an episode from Oct. 14, 2000. CONVENTION “Have you hayseeds ever heard of glow-tape?? Jesus of Nasareth!!” Still more from the 2005 episode. The Oracle Conclave at the Ramada features a truly awful photo montage. DO YOU LIKE LUXURY? “I did 900 voiceovers today for Jaguar. I also killed a man in an elevator.” The 2005 episode mined again! Ferrell, wearing an eyepatch and sounding very much like David Bowie, plays Dr. Richard Laverne, spy and spokesman for a British car manufacturer. Horatio Sanz and a dreamy Maya Rudolph co-star. BARBEQUE “Well, I’m going to put on a show of my own!” A (dress rehearsal?) version of a sketch from Will Ferrell’s first SNL episode ever, broadcast Sept. 30, 1995 and featuring Mariel Hemingway, future “Anchorman” co-star David Koechner and the future Mrs. Steve Carell, Nancy Walls. In the version on the DVD, Ferrell wears an big apron. EXTRAS: DRESS SKETCH 1 (5:54): “It gave us the necessary fuel to make furious lovemaking right in that stream. The very stream which will serve as your drinking source.” A top teaching assistant and his girlfriend connect with the lovers, Roger and Virginia, in a woodland retreat. Maya Rudolph, Seth Myers and, of course, Rachel Dratch co-star. DRESS SKETCH 2 (5:13): “I was going through his closet; look what I found!” Amy Poehler, Seth Myers, Jason Sudeikis and Fred Armisen play teens who stumble upon the embarrassing belongings of an “ALF”-obsessed ghost. GREEN DAY OFF-AIR PERFORMANCE (5:05): “Is the song still going on?” One of my favorite things on this disk. Ferrell, wearing less black than the others, hilariously brings the cowbell and a general sense of unease to a performance of “East Jesus Nowhere.”
