Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
Make-up masters are one of the driving forces of this column. Some of my favorite BTS images are people like Jack Pierce, Rob Bottin, Dick Smith, Rick Baker and their colleagues working on famous movie monsters.
Again, this goes back to my days reading Fango and Famous Monsters. In many ways Behind the Scenes images are tied with monster makers in my mind.
So, today we have one of the key monster movies from my youth and one of the best exercises in practical effects creations in recorded history: John Carpenter’s The Thing.
There will be more THING BTS shots, but I’m starting with sculptor Henry Alvarez prepping the Norris spider-head. I’m pretty sure I stumbled across this shot via William Forsche’s crazy collection of awesome behind the scenes pictures. If so, thanks Bill!
Here it is:

As has been mentioned in the talkbacks below, the shot is indeed from a Cinefantastique cover-shoot for Rob Bottin, not the actual film. Confirmed by Alvarez's son! I do have a few from the actual making of the flick, but still a badass shot, no? Same minds, same molds, but done for a magazine.
If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here. If you come back for tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic you’ll get the head, the tail, the whole damned thing. -Quint quint@aintitcool.com Follow Me On Twitter
