Harry here and hmmmmm.... the BIRDS remake called BATS is getting a pan from Aguire Jr... Could it be possible that a film featuring Lou Diamond Phillips could not rock like LA BAMBA? I had actually heard that this was better than it had any right to be... But... Of course with all genre films with one word animal titles... you'll have detractors... but then... I loved SSSSSSSSS and FROGS... There might be a proper mindset to see this film with... or it may be a piece of shit.... To Aguire Jr... it's a piece of shit. But smell for yourself... I will..
Harry,
The streak is over for me, but who could expect to only see good movies (even if this year has gotten a lot better over the past month). What I am going to say probably won't surprise you, but I still feel it necessary to state just how bad the stupid new movie "Bats" is. Its crap I tell you, nothing redeeming about it all, I was tempted to ask for my money back after the movie -- one problem though, I didnt pay, thankfully.
Those who haven't heard about this movie (ye lucky few), its basically what the title sounds like. Its "The Birdas" only with Bats and not directed by Hitchcock. Killer bats go after some Texas town, so Lou Diamond Phillips (playing a sheriff-- come on, where's that creibility?), Bob Gunton (The Shawshank Redemption warden as a mad scientist), a hot girl (dont know her real name, but shes a bat expert) and her assistant played by some guy named Leon try to save the town. Sounds original huh? Well, let me reassure you, its just as bad as it sounds.
The Acting: Once upon a time Lou Diamond Phillips used to be a good actor. La Bamba is good, Stand and Deliver also, even Courage Under Fire he was good in as a bad guy, but between this and "The Big Hit", he's making shit now, and he is a major reason why those movies stink. Here, he's just laughable bad, poor delivery of lines, no believability as a sherriff, he's in it for the paycheck lonely. Gunton's a good character actor when he has good material (like Shawshank), but when he doesn't have a good script, his limits show up quickly. Needless to say, that happened here. The hot girl isnt too bad but nothing much there. Overall: D, its not the worst part of the movie, but it ain't good either.
Script: There is none, all it is bats attacking people, no worry about believable characters at all. What an insult to movie fans. Overall: F, and that's being kind.
Effects: So, this movie could have been an enjoyable little treat like Deep Blue Sea was (Ok I admit it, i thought it was fun as long as you thought of it as "Jurrassic Sharks") if there had been some kind of good effects. Instead, the bats don;t look much like bats at all, instea they look like a cross between Alien and a Gargogyle. They just looked weird and stupid. They weren't scary at all, and I hate bats in real life. Everyone laughed at them, and when the bat attacked, there were thousands of quick cuts just so you couldn;t see them up close doing their damage. What does that mean, they knew the effects sucked, just like the movie does. At one point, there is a bit of white lightening ina cave scene too, and only Ed Wood himself could ahve enjoyed that. You would think all movies would have good effects by now, but this doesn't. Overall: F again.
There is no reason to see this movie. Some bad movies are so bad that its laughable (The Postman, C.H.U.D.S.), but you cant even laugh at this. It just sucks, waste of time, screen and celluloid. Consider yourself warned.
Aguire Jr.
