Sup all, Ambush Bug here. I talked a few weeks back about my new comic VINCENT PRICE PRESENTS #21: WITCHFINDER GENERAL which can still be ordered from the May Previews (Order # MAY10 0828) from Bluewater Comicsreviewed here by Stone’s Throw last week. I’m very proud of that one and if you liked the original movie and all things witches and witchfinding, I suggest you check it out when it hits the stands in July.
But I’m really excited to finally be able to share with you an original miniseries set to come out in August of this year (it’ll be in next month’s Previews, so look for it). It’s called NANNY & HANK. It’s a book about vampires, but before you start rolling your eyes, give it a chance. As the advert says, these are vampires like you’ve never seen before. It began with an ominous email from Darren G. Davis, head honcho of Bluewater Comics, with a single line; “Do you like vampires?” I responded, “I like vampires.” And from that initial exchange, a story formed. Darren wanted to write a story about elderly vampires based on the lives of his own grandparents. After a few conversations and a few key moments described by Darren, I had enough to come up with a story about a pair of elderly people very much in love and ready to settle down in their golden years, and what happens when they face the greatest challenge in their lives when one night they are bitten by a vampire.
So after I returned from SDCC last year, I sat down and wrote an issue a month for the next four months, mixing horror, humor, and heart in equal parts. I wanted this to be something different and being a huge horror fan, I didn’t want to write anything like TWILIGHT or DRACULA or any other vampire story out there. That was most important. If I was going to write a story centering on a genre that was at it’s height of popularity right now, I wanted it to be something I hadn’t read before. Every scene I wrote I did a mental check; had I seen this before in a movie or read anything like this in a book? If the answer was yes, I scrapped it. If it was no, I tossed it in. In the end, it is a story I am extremely proud of. One about love between two people and how that love can overcome even the highest of obstacles. But fear not, this isn’t all hugs and hearts. One of the first emails I got from artist Steve Babb was one that read, “Holy shit, I can’t believe you went there with these characters!” Since then, I’ve talked a lot about the story with Babb and Darren. When I first saw Babb’s artwork, I was uncertain it was right for the story. But after seeing the pages of the first issue, I immediately fell in love with his unique style; a mix between Mike Mignola and the Muppets with a touch of Chris Bacchalo tossed in for good measure. After seeing his panels for issue one, it made the final two issues of this four issue miniseries so easy to write. Now that I’ve seen the entire series complete, I wouldn’t have anyone else on this book. This is Babb’s first published work, but I guarantee he will be a big name soon.
So I hope readers of AICN Comics will check out NANNY & HANK. I put a hell of a lot into it and couldn’t be more pleased with the final result. If you’re a fan of good stories, good characters, and a good amount of blood, it’ll be right up your alley. I’ll be reporting back in a month or so letting you know how to order it through June’s Previews, but for the time being, scroll down and click on the pics below for a special advance preview of the book. Enjoy!
