Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.
As with all of the Pixar features, TOY STORY 3 will be prefaced by one of the studio's fantastic shorts, which is called DAY & NIGHT, written and directed by Teddy Newton. Newton is a character development vet on such Pixar works as THE INCREDIBLES, RATATOUILLE, and the 2008 (pre WALL-E) short PRESTO. He was also a development artist on UP and a storyboard artist on IRON GIANT, among other films. Newton has also done voice work on just about every Pixar film since THE INCREDIBLES, including TOY STORY 3.
Just out today on the PixarTalk.com site is one of the first looks at an image from DAY & NIGHT, which mixes 2-D (the characters) and 3-D animation (the images inside the characters' bodies), although it's my understanding this is a 2-D short. The posting also includes a brief plot summary of the short.
I'll admit, as much as I love the Pixar shorts, I miss the days when Pixar produced shorts that didn't just go on the front end of their features, like some of the early ones on the Pixar Short Films DVD collection. That said, the shorts are an excellent proving group for the next generation of Pixar artists and directors, and therefore I won't say anything negative about them, because there isn't one of them I couldn't watch a thousand times.
And my anticipation level for TOY STORY 3 is irrepressible. Tell us what you think about this latest short-film offering from the most successful studio of the last 10 years...
