Will New Line Manage To Make A SPEEDY GONZALEZ Movie That Won't Be Racist??

Merrick here...
This should've been posted yesterday but I sorta repressed it. I think that's because my Hispanic, drug addicted ex-wife was nicknamed "Speedy Gonzales" (Harry may've come up with that one - I don't recall) and I probably just didn't wanna go there. Nonetheless...
"Garfield" scribes Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen will adapt the classic animated Looney Tunes character into a live-action/CG hybrid feature, with George Lopez attached to voice Speedy.
...says Hollywood Reporter HERE. The article goes on to explain that the concept's sensibilities will be "modernized" per George Lopez's "Latino seal of approval" (in the words of project producer Ann Lopez). Ann goes on to specify:
"We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s -- the racist Speedy," Ann Lopez said with a chuckle. "Speedy's going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he's a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he's good at." That path becomes clearer once Speedy befriends a gun-shy race-car driver.
I hope this works out better than ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL, which...as I recently Tweeted...my toddler son demanded to walk out of roughly half-way through.
